The Ferengi Rules of Acquisition

Specie umanoide tecnologicamente molto avanzata che è rimasta per lungo tempo un mistero per la Federazione prima dell'incontro presso il sistema Delphi Ardu nel 2364 (The Last Outpost). Basata su un forte senso dell'onore, la filosofia di vita ferengi è un'esasperazione della cultura capitalista terrestre. Fino al 2374, alle donne ferengi non è consentito mostrarsi in pubblico, parlare con estranei, indossare vestiti, trarre profitto da operazioni commerciali e si presuppone che ammorbidiscano il cibo per i maschi masticandolo; dopo il 2374, il Grande Nagus Zek ha emendato la Dichiarazione delle Opportunità riconoscendo alle donne pari diritti (Profit and Lace). Tutta l'Alleanza Ferengi viene comandata dall'ufficio del Grande Nagus localizzato nella Sala delle Opportunità all'interno della Torre del Commercio di Ferenginar. Una delle autorità più potenti della civiltà Ferengi è la FCA, la Ferengi Commerce Authority, che si trova al quarantesimo piano di un palazzo il cui ascensore costa 7 pezzi di gold pressed latinum per il suo utilizzo. La particolare struttura a quattro lobi del cervello ferengi rende impossibile ai Betazoidi la lettura delle loro menti. I Ferengi non ammettono l'autopsia sui cadaveri prima del termine del loro complesso rituale funerario (Suspicions), che prevede che la salma venga essiccata e tagliata a pezzi; questi pezzi vengono venduti e il danaro ricavato viene utilizzato dalla famiglia per pagare i debiti del morto (The Alternate). Le due marche di bevande più famose tra i Ferengi sono l'Elwasser e la Slug-o-Cola (Profit and Lace). Per i Ferengi le cinque fasi dell'acquisizione sono Infatuazione, Giustificazione, Appropriazione, Ossessione e Rivendita (Alice).
Un detto ferengi recita «Le cose belle arrivano in pacchetti piccoli» (Move Along Home); un altro detto recita «Il senso della misura è la più grande delle qualità» (The House of Quark); un altro ancora recita «Una buona bugia è più facile da credere della verità» (Shattered).
Per i Borg, i Ferengi sono la Specie 180 (Infinite Regress).
La legge ferengi impone ai parenti dell'imputato di fargli confessare i suoi crimini, a pagare per essi e di individuare gli eventuali complici (Family Business).

Regole dell'Acquisizione

Le Regole dell'Acquisizione compaiono per la prima volta in The Nagus e sono state inventate da Ira Steven Behr. Le regole sono in tutto 285 (The Maquis - Part I), ma nel 2151 erano 173 (Acquisition).

Note

L'imperatore dell'Etiopia aveva il titolo di Negus, titolo che ha una certa assonanza con la massima autorità dei Ferengi, il Nagus. Inoltre in Etiopia gli stranieri vengono chiamati «ferengi», un nome che viene dalla storpiatura del termine inglese «foreigner», che significa «straniero».
