567 - Penumbra

Data Stellare 52576.2: Su Deep Space Nine si apprende che Worf è disperso dopo una violenta battaglia contro il Dominio. A causa di necessità strategiche, Sisko è costretto ad abbandonare la ricerca della capsula di salvataggio con Worf a bordo, ma Ezri ruba un runabout e si lancia alla ricerca di Worf.

In questo episodio...

• Sisko chiede a Kasidy di sposarlo, anche se i Profeti consigliano a Sisko di non farlo.
• Dukat assume chirurgicamente sembianze bajoriane.
• Si vede la casa che Sisko progetta di costruire su Bajor, desiderio di cui si è venuti a conoscenza nell'episodio Favor the Bold.
• Veniamo a sapere che il terreno che Sisko ha acquistato su Bajor misura 12 ecapeti, si trova nella provincia di Kendra, vicino al monastero di Adarak; all'interno della proprietà scorre un piccolo ruscello, probabilmente un affluente del fiume Yolja che scorre lì vicino.
• Dax viola per la seconda volta le regola (la prima in Rejoined) secondo cui un Trill non dovrebbe riallacciare relazioni di un precedente ospite.
• Viene distrutto il Gander.
• Jadzia nomina di nuovo il capitano gallamita Boday.

• I nomi (provvisori o definitivi) dei primi due episodi che compongono questo arco vengono usati in astronomia per identificare la parte più chiara (Penumbra) e più scura (Umbra) dell'ombra creata da un'eclisse (Eclipse).
• I ricordi che Ezri ha quando si trova nell'alloggio di Worf sono dialoghi tratti dagli episodi Time's Orphan, Change of Heart, You are Cordially Invited....
• Nell'episodio vengono citati i So'na che hanno un avamposto su Devos II in cui producono il ketracel bianco per i soldati Jem'Hadar. Nonostante la grafia sia diversa, potrebbero trattarsi dei Son'a visti in Insurrection.
• La battuta di Ezri a Worf «You're a fellow officer. I would've done the same for Kira or Julian.» perché la sua operazione di salvataggio non sembri troppo personale richiama la battuta che ha fatto Worf a Ezri in Field of Fire «You are a fellow officer. I would have the same concern for Chief O'Brien or Doctor Bashir.» Inoltre, come in Change of Heart, in cui Worf disobbedisce agli ordini per salvare Jadzia, in questo episodio Ezri disobbedisce agli ordini di Sisko per salvare Worf.

• Il codice di autorizzazione di Ezri per accedere all'alloggio di Worf è Dax 974 Alfa 3.
• Nel display TACTICAL SIMULATION del Gander, le Badlands vengono denominate SECTOR 04-70, e i numeri sotto i dati della Koraga sono 4077-91.

YATI

• In Heart of Glory viene detto che per i Klingon è un disonore abbandonare una nave, quindi le capsule di salvataggio su una nave da guerra klingon sono una cosa piuttosto inutile.
• Dopo che Worf è trasportato sul runabout, Ezri cerca di curargli la ferita alla testa: non si capisce bene perché usi una pezza di stoffa e non un rigeneratore dermico.
• Subito dopo il recupero di Worf, Ezri dice che avrebbe chiamato la stazione per informare i colleghi. Per prima cosa, è molto difficile che si possa inviare un messaggio all'esterno delle Badlands, considerati i fenomeni violenti che vi si manifestano. Secondo, anche ammesso di riuscire a inviare un messaggio, è un'azione molto pericolosa, considerato che le truppe Jem'Hadar sono nella stessa zona e potrebbero rilevare la trasmissione e, quindi, la posizione della nave.
• Quando Dax e Worf scoprono di non aver preso il trasmettitore subspaziale di emergenza si accusano uno con l'altra. In effetti dovrebbero accusare la Flotta Stellare: che senso ha preparare due zainetti comodi da prendere per scappare in fretta e poi mettere il trasmettitore di emergenza in un altro posto? In Natural Law tornerà un'incongruenza analoga a questa.
• Dopo aver lasciato una scia infuocata, il Gander esplode in cielo. Il centro dell'esplosione non si muove, ma dovrebbe procedere grosso modo nella stessa direzione e con la stessa velocità della scia di fuoco [T:28:52].

Scene tagliate

La prima scena del teaser, quella tra Sisko e Kasidy, era originariamente prevista tra Sisko ed il figlio Jake (parecchie battute di Kasidy sono le stesse che avrebbe dovuto pronunciare Jake). Ecco com'era prevista la scena nello script:

1    INT. SISKO'S QUARTERS (OPTICAL)

 We start CLOSE on a verdant LANDSCAPE of lush hills.
 As we PULL BACK, we REVEAL that --

2    SISKO (OPTICAL)

 is looking at a PADD showing a PICTURE of some
 property on Bajor. He smiles to himself... a
 moment, then the door OPENS and JAKE ENTERS.

     JAKE
   Hey, dad.

     SISKO
   Jake-O.

     JAKE
   Something smells good.

     SISKO
   I'm making dinner for Kasidy.

 Jake sees a POT bubbling on the STOVE, moves to
 investigate.

     JAKE
   I thought she was on a supply
   run.

     SISKO
   She's getting back tonight.

 Jake reaches to taste what's in the pot.

     SISKO
    (playfully)
   Get away from there.

     JAKE
    (licking his finger)
   I just wanted a taste.

 Sisko stands and tosses the PADD on the table.

     SISKO
   You can have the leftovers
   tomorrow.

 Sisko shoos him off and gives the pot a stir.

     JAKE
    (feigning hurt)
   You're not inviting me to join
   you for dinner?

     SISKO
   I haven't seen Kas in over a
   week.

     JAKE
   Neither have I.

     SISKO
   And I'm sure she misses you.
    (smiles)
   But not as much as she misses me.

 Jake smiles and catches sight of the PADD on the
 table.

     JAKE
   What's this?

 Sisko has a secret, and he's building to revealing
 it.

     SISKO
   Nice spot, huh?

     JAKE
   Bajor, right?

     SISKO
   Kendra province. Just south of
   the Yolja river. I was there the
   other day.

     JAKE
   I thought you went to some
   conference in Rakantha.

     SISKO
   I did. But afterwards Vedek Oram
   invited me to see his Monastery
   in Adarak. We took a transport
   across the mountains.
    (smiling at the memory)
   The sun was just going down and
   the whole valley was shimmering
   in the light. I looked out the
   window and said to myself "This
   is the place. This is where I'm
   going to build my house."

 Jake's heard this type of talk before...

     JAKE
   Here we go again. You and your
   dream house.

     SISKO
   You think this is just your old
   man's idle fantasy?
    (re: the PADD)
   What if I told you that as of
   this morning, all this land
   belongs to me?

     JAKE
   You're serious?

     SISKO
   Twelve hecapates. I'm going to
   start building as soon as the
   war's over.
    (smiling at the
    picture)
   I'll retire here someday... and
   watch the sun set over the
   mountains every night.

 Sisko sees Jake looking at him.

     SISKO
   What?

     JAKE
   I don't know... it's a little
   weird to hear you talk about
   retiring.

     SISKO
   I said someday.

     JAKE
    (smiles)
   I guess Starfeet'll get a few
   more years out of you.

     SISKO
   Once the war's over, I'll have a
   place to get away on weekends.

     JAKE
   Get away? Do you know what's
   going to happen when the Bajorans
   realize the Emissary has a house
   in Kendra province? It'll become
   a shrine. People'll come from
   all over to see it. And you.

     SISKO
   You're exaggerating. Again.

     JAKE
   We'll see.

 Jake studies his dad's face for a beat.

     JAKE
   It's funny how thing's turn out.
   I remember when you first got
   this assignment -- you almost
   turned it down.

     SISKO
   I know. I never thought I'd get
   so attached to Bajor. But more
   and more, it feels like home.

     JAKE
    (smiles)
   I can think of worse places to
   visit my old man...

     SISKO
   You just make sure you bring my
   grandkids to see me a few times a
   year.

     JAKE
   Grandkids?

     SISKO
   Lots of 'em.

Dopo che Damar chiede a Dukat se quest'ultimo crede realmente nei Pah-wraiths, è stato tolto il seguente dialogo, presente nello script:

     DAMAR
   I believe in Cardassia.

     DUKAT
   Good. Then we're still on the
   same side.
