565 - Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges

Data Stellare Sconosciuta: Appena prima della partenza per una conferenza che si tiene su Romulus, Bashir riceve la visita di Sloan, il direttore della Sezione 31, una sezione estremista dell'intelligence della Flotta Stellare, che chiede a Bashir di acquisire la maggior quantità di informazioni possibile sulla leadership del governo romulano. Bashir, recalcitrante a soddisfare la richiesta di Sloan, riferisce dell'accaduto a Sisko, preoccupato del fatto che, malgrado la Flotta abbia ufficialmente condannato la Sezione 31, ci sia ancora qualcuno che la protegga. Dopo essersi consultato con l'Ammiraglio Ross, Sisko chiede a Bashir di accondiscendere alle richieste di Sloan per capire quali siano le sue vere intenzioni.

• Scopriamo che, contrariamente a quanto è successo all'Ordine Ossidiano, la Tal Shiar non è stata particolarmente indebolita dalla sconfitta nella Nebulosa Omarion (The Die is Cast).

• Il titolo è una famosa frase latina di Cicerone tratta dal Pro Milone che viene tradotta in italiano in «Tacciono, infatti, le leggi in mezzo alle armi». Il brano è il seguente:

• La frase di Bashir «Never say die» (tradotto nei sottotitoli in «Mai disperare») è una citazione da Il Mercante di Venezia di Shakespeare, che è diventata un modo di dire per esortare a non darsi mai per vinti e di non cedere, costi quello che costi.
• Secondo quanto detto da Sisko e Bashir, la conferenza di quest'ultimo è piuttosto importante, tuttavia la stanza in cui si tiene è ridicolmente piccola e il pubblico di partecipanti è formato da un pugno di persone.
• I due ufficiali della Bellerophon che parlano in sala mensa dell'aneurisma dell'ammiraglio Ross sono il guardiamarina Hickam (il maschio) e il tenente Wheeler (la donna). I nomi provengono dallo script.
• Nello script del Deep Space Nine CD Companion, la scena del meeting vista all'inizio del teaser era prevista come Scena 6, inserita dopo la prima visita di Sloan a Bashir e prima della scena tra Bashir e Sisko nell'ufficio del capitano.
• Adrienne Barbeau ha interpretato la marziana Amanda Carter nell'episodio A Spider In The Web di Babylon 5.

• Quando Ross e Bashir parlano nella sala tattica, le stelle fuori dagli oblò non si muovono, ma la nave sta orbitando intorno a Romulus.

• Alla fine della conferenza Bashir e Sloan si fermano nella stanza e parlano liberamente di Sezione 31 e assassini vari. A nessuno dei due viene in mente che i Romulani, con tutta probabilità, stanno monitorando la sala e i loro discorsi?

Versione italiana

• Nel sottotitolo di Canal Jimmy del titolo dell'episodio è stato omessa la parola «enim», benché in tutti gli annunci di Canal Jimmy il titolo sia identico a quello inglese.
• Subcommander viene tradotto come Sottocomandante.
• Le due frasi di Bashir, nella scena finale, «Are you expecting applause? Did you come to take a bow?» sono state tradotte con la singola frase «Sei venuto per fare un inchino?».

 A short time later. N.D. Romulans and Federation
 personnel file into the room and take up seats.
 Bashir is going over his notes near a lectern set up
 in front of a wall monitor. There's one seat
 noticeably empty in the front row. When everyone is
 settled, Bashir steps up to the lectern.

     BASHIR
   Good afternoon. I'm Doctor
   Julian Bashir from Deep Space
   Nine and I'll be speaking to you
   on the subject of Dominion
   biogenic weapons.

 There's a murmur from the crowd and Bashir falters
 momentarily as Koval makes his way through the hall
 and takes the empty chair right up front. Koval's
 eyes bore into him and Bashir doesn't like the fact
 that the chairman seems so interested in his
 lecture.

     BASHIR
   I'd, uh... I'd like to start with
   an overview of the weapon that's
   become known as... the
   Quickening.

Solamente nello script Bashir chiede al senatore Cretak di poter parlare in privato:

33   INT. ROMULAN FORUM

 Bashir is moving through the crowd as if he were
 sleepwalking. The small talk and diplomatic
 niceties swirling around him seem meaningless to
 him. He's utterly alone, and seemingly powerless to
 stop Sloan.

 Then he sees Cretak ENTER the room, with another
 Romulan. He thinks for a moment... finally makes a
 decision and goes across the room toward her.

     BASHIR
    (to Cretak)
   Senator... may I speak with you
   for a moment?

Dopo che Bashir ha avuto il colloquio con Cretak, e Sloan va a fargli visita nel suo alloggio della Bellerophon, nello script era prevista la seguente scena (le parti in grigio si sono viste nell'episodio):

 The moment hangs in the air -- is Bashir about to
 accuse him?

     BASHIR
   Think about it. We're in the
   middle of a very sensitive
   military conference. What if the
   Romulans saw him as an obstacle
   to their war objectives? What if
   they wanted to remove that
   obstacle by --

     SLOAN
   Doctor. I know how much you love
   cloak and dagger, but you're
   starting to see conspiracies
   everywhere. Ross is ill, that's
   all there is to it.

 Bashir smiles sheepishly as if feeling ridiculous.

     BASHIR
   You're probably right.

     SLOAN
   Now what else is on your mind?

     BASHIR
   I'm not convinced that Koval
   actually has Tuvan Syndrome. His
   "symptoms" could be the result of
   any of fifty other health
   problems.
