2 - Where No Man Has Gone Before

Data Stellare 1312.4: Nel tentativo di uscire dalla galassia, l'Enterprise viene scossa da un potente campo di energia. In seguito a ciò il tenente Gary Mitchell e la dottoressa Dehner subiscono un forte incremento dei loro latenti poteri di ESP. Purtroppo, però, anche le loro ambizioni sono cresciute a dismisura.

• Gary Lockwood ha interpretato la parte di Frank Poole in 2001: Odissea nello spazio.
• Dalla scheda medica di Mitchell risulterebbe che gli abitanti di Deneb IV comunicano anche telepaticamente. Non ci sono più stati riscontri di questo dato in seguito.
• Secondo i dati scolpiti sulla lapide, Kirk sarebbe nato in data stellare 1277.1, ma la lapide ha anche il nome errato.

  average ability at the usual childhood "guessing games", some
  grade school interest and ability in elementary magician's
  trick, et cetera. There is also a strong tendency through the
  maternal bloodline toward esper-oriented abilities, dating
  back through at least six generations to both males and females
  who dabbled in metaphysical studies and, in at least one case,
  a female ancestor who was interested in spiritual readings.

  secondary school days and it is, in part, the basis for
  interest and vocational training as a psychiatrist.
  Participation in tests and studies of other esper-oriented
  beings are the subject od a thesis now being published by this
  officer in association with the Collage of Medical Sciences of
  the Tri-Planetary Academy and was, in fact, the reason for this
  officer's posting to the Aldebaran Colony.
  It must be stressed this officer's interest in esper-perception
  has been in relationship and pursuant to vocation as a
  psychiatrist.

• Il nome della città di nascita di Mitchell (Eldman) e quello della città natale di Dehner (Delman) sono uno l'anagramma dell'altro.

YATI

• Nella tomba che Mitchell prepara per Kirk, si legge «James R. Kirk», mentre in seguito si apprende che il secondo nome di Kirk è Tiberius. Con ogni probabilità a questo punto della produzione non era ancora stato deciso nulla a proposito.
• Spock afferma che uno dei suoi antenati è un terrestre. In seguito verrà stabilito che è sua madre ad essere terrestre.
• Il colpo di fucile phaser che Kirk spara a Mitchell non provoca nemmeno una piccola bruciatura sull'uniforme.

Riciclati

• La matte dell'esterno della stazione mineraria è opera dell'artista Albert Whitlock. Il dipinto è stato riutilizzato per l'esterno della colonia di Tantalus V in Dagger of the Mind.

Versione italiana

• Per due volte Kirk chiama la persona al timone «Helmsman», parola inglese che significa, appunto, «timoniere».
• Durante la registrazione di un diario, Kirk dice che la data stellare è 372.9 invece di 1312.9 [T:10:55].
• La velocità di curvatura viene chiamata «velocità astrale» [T:11:07].
• Durante il briefing Sulu dice che il potere di Mitchell aumenta in maniera proporzionale, mentre in originale dice «is increasing geometrically».
• Durante la registrazione finale del diario Kirk dice «aiuto comandante Gary Mitchell», mentre in originale il grado è «lieutenant commander», la cui traduzione corretta è «Tenente comandante» [T:46:43].
