049 - Regeneration

Febbraio-Marzo 2153: Un gruppo di ricercatori artici rinvengono sulla Terra i resti di un vascello alieno risalente ad almeno un secolo prima sepolto nei ghiacci. Assieme al vascello vengono ritrovati due corpi umanoidi potenziati con apparecchi cibernetici. Quando i due corpi vengono analizzati, ritornano in vita e si impossessano dell'astronave su cui si trovano. L'Enterprise viene chiamata per intercettare il vascello catturato, ma Archer scopre presto che si trova davanti ad un nemico invulnerabile.

In questo episodio...

• Vengono ritrovati i rottami ed alcuni droni conservati nel ghiaccio della sfera borg che, tornata nel 2063 per evitare il primo contatto tra Vulcaniani e Umani, fu distrutta dall'Enterprise.
• Phlox viene parzialmente assimilato dai Borg, ma si salva grazie al suo particolare sistema immunitario che ritarda l'assimilazione. Phlox si salva annientando le nanosonde esponendosi alle radiazioni omicron.
• Alla fine dell'episodio è il 1 marzo 2153.
• Phlox dice alla fine di aver ricevuto, durante il collegamento con gli altri droni, la consapevolezza che avessero mandato una trasmissione subspaziale. La trasmissione era una serie numerica, ripetuta. Analizzando questa serie numerica si è scoperto essere la locazione della Terra. Spedita da qualche parte nel cuore del Quadrante Delta. T'Pol dice che ci vorranno circa 200 anni prima che la trasmissione raggiunga la destinazione.
• Due Borg ex-Tarkaliani vengono seminati nello spazio aperto.
• Si vede il logo della Flotta Stellare del 2153 sul braccio sinistro dell'uniforme del personale di terra.
• Apprendiamo che esiste già la suddivisione della galassia in quattro quadranti.

Note

• Bonita Friedericy è la moglie di John Billingsley.
• Il metodo usato dai Borg per definire la posizione della Terra nella Galassia è basato sulla posizione di una serie di pulsar, lo stesso sistema con il quale gli scienziati della NASA hanno indicato la locazione della Terra sulle due targhe di alluminio dorato a bordo dei Pioneer 10 e 11 (in questo caso, le pulsar utilizzate come faro sono 14).

• Quando Archer e Reed si teletrasportano sul cargo, appena prima di incontrare i Borg, su un pilone alle loro spalle sulla sinistra e leggermente in basso c'è un 74.
• Quando uno dei droni si rianima, sul monitor si vede un pulsante azzurro con la scritta 07-254 (2 + 5 = 7) [T:08:55].
• Quando Reed e Archer stanno ispezionando la nave assimilata dai droni, su una specie di trave di sostegno si legge il numero 1472 [T:34:53].

• Il monitor delle funzioni vitali visualizza i tracciati PULSE, RESP, CELL RATE, EEG.

Blooper

• A [T:18:10] la guardia viene scagliata contro un tavolo dell'infermeria da una neo-Borg. Controcampo, la guardia rimbalza contro una griglia che non era lì nell'inquadratura precedente. Controcampo, la guardia cade a terra; la griglia continua a non esserci. Il tavolo con la griglia sembra essere quello accanto, che si vede a [T:18:20]. Tra l'altro, nella scena che si svolge pochi istanti dopo, il tavolo teatro del rimbalzo è in ordine.
• Pessima idea quella di mettere le sigle sulle paratie della nave assimilata dai Borg: si vede chiaramente che Archer e Reed continuano a camminare, ma sono sempre vicini alle solite paratie.

YATI

• È piuttosto strano che la scienziata trovi il secondo drone sotto pochi centimetri di neve, visto che è lì da quasi 90 anni.

Versione italiana

• In occasione della prima trasmissione in Italia, questo episodio è stato trasmesso senza i titoli di coda ed è stato unito a Bounty. Tra i due episodi, oltre la pausa pubblicitaria è stato trasmesso un breve stacco che mostra l'Enterprise mentre entra in curvatura e il logo «Star Trek Enterprise» accompagnati da un jingle tratto dalla sigla di apertura.

Foster: I believe you're looking at a form of nanotechnology. I found thousands of these in both aliens. They're not just regenerating the damaged tissue, they're repairing the mechanical components as well!.. As far as I can tell, this arm is good as new!

Drake: The Denobulans have experimented with nanotechnology, but... they have nothing like this!

Drake: Anything?
Rooney: Oh!.. Plenty!
Drake: You seem a little jumpy.
Rooney: Cybernetic corpses, digging through frozen remains in the middle of the night, why would I be jumpy?

Tucker: They're in the ice for a century.
Archer: Hard to believe anything could survive. [T:11:38]

Reed: What sort of people would replace perfectly good body parts with cybernetic implants?
Phlox: You of all people should be open-minded about technology.
Reed: I don't have a problem with it. As long as it stays outside of my skin. [T:12:23]

Archer: Can you remove the nanoprobes?
Phlox: Not surgically. These devices are multiplying at an extraordinary rate. I could never extract them all.

T'Pol: As I recall, Cochrane was famous for his imaginative stories. He was also known to be frequently intoxicated.

Phlox: Use extreme caution, Lieutenant: their physical strength has been enhanced, it's critical that you don't let them touch you!

Tucker: One or two torpedoes ought to do it.

Phlox: I underestimated these nanoprobes once. I don't intend to make the same mistake twice. [T:25:56]

T'Pol: There are 29 life forms on that transport. It's logical to assume they've all been infected. We could endanger Enterprise if they're brought aboard. Perhaps you should reconsider.
Archer: Are you saying we shouldn't go after that ship?
T'Pol: I'm saying: we destroy it. [T:28:15]

Hoshi: They're sending a transmission. Some kind of activation sequence.
Archer: Lock it!
Hoshi: I can't!
Tucker: Tucker to the bridge. The cybernetic circuits just light up as a Christmas tree! [T:31:40]

Phlox: The nanoprobes seem to be having trouble with my immune system. But they are persistent little fellows, it won't be long before they adapt.

Hoshi: They're healing us. Audio only.
Archer: This is captain...
Borg: You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. [T:32.11]

Archer: They told their homeworld how to find Earth.
T'Pol: Did you learn where the message was sent?
Archer: Somewhere deep in the Delta Quadrant.
T'Pol: Then I doubt there's any immediate danger. It will take at least two hundred years for a subspace message to reach the Delta Quadrant, assuming that it's received at all.
