144 - Up The Long Ladder

Data Stellare 42823.2: L'Enterprise ha l'ordine di investigare sulla sorgente di un misterioso segnale di emergenza che risulta in disuso da almeno 200 anni. Giunto al sistema da cui è partito il segnale, l'equipaggio scopre che la sua stella è in estrema attività, con eruzioni solari molto potenti, e che Bringloid, il quinto pianeta, ospita circa duecento coloni, probabilmente discendenti degli ufficiali del Mariposa, una nave dispersa in quel settore due secoli prima. Una volta portati a bordo per evitare gli effetti deleteri dell'attività solare, i coloni informano Picard della probabile esistenza di un'altra colonia a circa mezzo anno-luce di distanza. Dopo averla individuata, il capitano vi si dirige e scopre che l'intera popolazione è formata dai cloni di cinque scienziati del Mariposa.

• Barrie Ingham è l'unico attore che è comparso sia in Star Trek, sia in Dr. Who, in cui è apparso nell'episodio The Myth Makers nel 1964.
• La donna bringloide è interpretata da un'attrice veramente incinta, si tratta della moglie dell'addetto ai prop Alan Sims.
