Data Stellare 4202.9: Entrando nel sistema L-370, Kirk scopre che tutti i sette pianeti sono stati distrutti e anche i sistemi vicini sono stati sconvolti da qualcosa. Il ritrovamento della USS Constellation semidistrutta, con a bordo il commodoro Mattew Decker fa scoprire che esiste una gigantesca macchina capace di distruggere interi pianeti.
Spock: Vulcans never bluff.
McCoy: To blazes with regulations! You can't let him take command when you know he's wrong.
Kirk: He gave his life in an attempt to save others. Not the worst way to go.
Kirk: Back in the twentieth century, the H-bomb was the ultimate weapon, their doomsday machine. And we used something like it to destroy another doomsday machine. Probably the first time such a weapon has ever been used for constructive purposes.
McCoy: I'm a Doctor, not a mechanic.
Spock: That sir, is illogical.
Spock: Random chance seems to have operated in our favour.
McCoy: In plain, non-Vulcan English, we've been lucky.
Spock: I believe I said that, Doctor.
