Trama

Data Stellare 4040.7: Kirk, Spock e McCoy scendono su 892 IV, nei cui pressi è scomparsa la Beagle. Qui trovano una civiltà paragonabile a quella terrestre del XX secolo, ma con una struttura sociale identica a quella dell'antica Roma imperiale, e trovano anche il Capitano R.M. Merrik della Beagle, conosciuto in quella civiltà come Primo Cittadino Merikus.

• Chekov dice che il pianeta è a 1/16 di parsec, cioè a quasi 2000 miliardi di chilometri di distanza, che a warp 12 (1700c) significa più di un'ora di viaggio. A parte che Kirk non ha neppure ordinato al timoniere di procedere alla massima velocità, la risposta di Chekov «Vi arriveremo tra pochi secondi» è quanto mai inopportuna.
• Spock dice «Situations quite familiar to the six million who died in your first world war, the eleven million who died in your second, the thirty-seven million who died in your third.» Ma è un fatto che la seconda guerra mondiale ha avuto un bilancio di più di 60 milioni di vittime e, secondo quanto detto da Riker in First Contact la terza guerra mondiale ne avrebbe causati ben 600 milioni.
