Enterprise ha l'ordine di investigare sulla sorgente di un misterioso segnale di emergenza che risulta in disuso da almeno 200 anni. Giunto al sistema da cui č partito il segnale, l'equipaggio scopre che la sua stella č in estrema attivitą, con eruzioni solari molto potenti, e che
Bringloid, il quinto pianeta, ospita circa duecento coloni, probabilmente discendenti degli ufficiali del
Mariposa, una nave dispersa in quel settore due secoli prima. Una volta portati a bordo per evitare gli effetti deleteri dell'attivitą solare, i coloni informano Picard della probabile esistenza di un'altra colonia a circa mezzo anno-luce di distanza. Dopo averla individuata, il Capitano vi si dirige e scopre che l'intera popolazione č formata dai cloni di cinque scienziati del
Mariposa.
