549 - The Sound of Her Voice

Data Stellare 51948.3: A bordo della Defiant, Sisko e l'equipaggio ricevono una richiesta di soccorso da parte del capitano Lisa Cusak, la cui capsula di salvataggio è naufragata su un pianeta dopo la distruzione della sua nave. La Defiant inizia così una gara contro il tempo per salvare la vita del capitano Cusak.

Note

• Alla fine, durante la cerimonia funebre, O'Brien parla degli amici che in futuro non ci saranno più e, subito dopo, la prima ad essere inquadrata è Jadzia, questa è una scelta deliberata in quanto durante le riprese di questo episodio si sapeva già che Terry Farrell avrebbe lasciato la serie.

• Odo cita il regolamento della Stazione numero 25-62 (2 + 5 = 7 e 6 - 2 = 4) e quello numero 47-21.
• Odo sceglie il programma olografico Parigi 1928 (19 + 28 =  47).
• Odo prenota la sala ologrammi per 4 ore alle 21.00 di domenica, mentre Quark insiste per sabato (un giorno o l'altro, a seconda da dove si inizia a contare, è il settimo giorno della settimana).
• La ruota del Dabo nel bar di Quark non è a norma secondo l'articolo 4731 del Regolamento della Stazione.

• La Olympia è partita dal quadrante Alfa in missione esplorativa circa 11 anni prima del 2374 (8 secondo Lisa Cusak durante le sue conversazioni a cui vanno aggiunti 3 anni quando Bashir stabilisce da quanto è morto il capitano). Nel 2363, un anno prima di The Next Generation, le uniformi della sezione comando della Flotta Stellare avevano il bordo rosso sulle spalle nere, ma l'uniforme che indossa il capitano Cusak è quella dalla terza stagione di The Next Generation in poi.
• Il capitano Cusak dice che la sua nave era partita per una missione a lungo termine della durata di 8 anni. È possibile che nessuno si sia informato un minimo sulla missione e si sia accorto che secondo i registri la nave in realtà era partita 11 anni prima e non 8?
• D'accordo che la nave della Cusak era in viaggio lontano dal centro della Federazione, ma pare ragionevole che ogni tanto le inviassero delle comunicazioni (messaggi personali o comunicazioni ufficiali), quindi il capitano Cusak avrebbe dovuto capire subito che qualcosa non andava, non avendo mai sentito parlare della guerra con il Dominio.
• È strano che nei dialoghi nessuno citi mai una data stellare.

Dopo che Quark si fa promettere da Jake di non riferire nulla di quanto sta architettando a suo padre, nello script erano previste queste battute:

   Constable's one month anniversary
   is going to be a very special
   occasion. For the major and for
   my bank account.

Quando Odo porta nel bar di Quark il pacchetto regalo per mostrarlo a Quark, prima della scena in cui Quark corre incontro a Odo, nello script era previsto un dialogo tra Jake e Quark:

 Quark is working behind the bar and Jake is sitting on
 one of the stools.

     JAKE
   So let me get this straight -- you
   have fifteen cases of stolen
   Denevan crystals...

     QUARK
   Allegedly stolen.

     JAKE
   ... allegedly stolen crystals
   hidden somewhere down in Cargo Bay
   Three. And you're planning to
   sell them to a Nausicaan friend
   of yours -- who just happens to
   be a known criminal...

     QUARK
   Alleged criminal.

     JAKE
   So, how are you going to get an
   "alleged" criminal onto the
   station and deliver the
   "allegedly" stolen goods to him
   without Odo getting wind of it?
   And what does any of this have to
   do with his anniversary?

 Odo ENTERS the bar, carrying a small box.

     QUARK
   Watch and learn..

 Quark busies himself at the bar as Odo approaches. Odo
 is a little uncomfortable with this entire anniversary
 thing.

Quando Bashir finalmente viene distolto dal lavoro ed inizia a parlare con Lisa Cusak e lei gli dice che ci vorranno almeno due giorni per sviscerare quello che si tiene dentro, nello script la scena proseguiva così:

 She begins coughing.

     BASHIR
   Captain... ?

     LISA'S VOICE
   I'm fine. It's almost time for
   my next injection.

     BASHIR
    (concerned)
   Any dizziness?

     LISA'S VOICE
   A little... especially when I
   stand up.

 That's not good.

     LISA'S VOICE
   If you're about to deliver more
   bad news, I'd just as soon you
   kept it to yourself.
    (beat)
   Besides, you're just trying to
   change the subject. You were
   about to impress me with amazing
   tales of your brilliant academic
   career at medical school.

     BASHIR
   All right. Medical school. I
   matriculated in the fall of --

     LISA'S VOICE
   Back up. Don't you know how to
   tell a story. Start at the
   beginning. Why did you decide to
   become a doctor?

 Bashir smiles to himself.

     BASHIR
   Ah. Therein lies a tale...

Quando Quark mostra a Jake i cristalli ormai inutili perché l'affare sembrava andato a monte, è stato tagliato il seguente dialogo (le battute in grigio sono quelle presenti nell'episodio):

      QUARK
   No kidding it's a lot. Now it's
   just a crate full of junk.

     JAKE

   Things might work out.

     QUARK
   They might. But they won't.

   made in the last year? I almost
   made a fortune by overcharging
   Weyoun during the Dominion
   occupation. I almost made a
   fortune by helping the Grand Nagus
   regain his throne. And I almost
   found a thousand bricks of gold-
   pressed latinum, before I realized
   it was in Morn's stomach.

     JAKE
   It's been a tough year for
   everyone.

     QUARK
    (dismissive)
   You mean "the war?" Let me tell
   you something about "the war" --
   everyone's had a victory in this
   conflict except me.

     JAKE
   You did rescue your mother from
   the Dominion.

     QUARK
   And then she promptly destroyed
   the entire fabric of Ferengi
   society by letting women wear
   clothes. That's no victory.
    (beat)
   I'm cursed. That's what it is.
   I should change the name of my bar
   to "Cursed Quark's." I wonder how
   much it would cost to redo all the
   signs...
    (frustrated)
   Ah...

 He slams the lid shut on the container and starts
 walking toward the door.

     [JAKE
   You know, there's still a chance
   that Odo won't find out about any
   of this.]

Ecco cosa dice Lisa Cusak mentre O'Brien e Bashir parlano in sala macchine e O'Brien tenta di effettuare il collegamento a due vie.

     LISA'S VOICE
   ... the rain has stopped. I guess
   that's a good sign. At least I
   won't have to swim out of here.
    (beat)
   Now if the sun would just come
   out. Or maybe the sun doesn't
   come out on this planet.

   Now there's a depressing
   thought. No day, just
   night. Just a long, dark
   night.
    (beat)
   Let's not get too gloomy,
   Lisa. Your rescuers are
   on the way. They might
   be right outside the cave
   at this very moment.
   They're tracking your
   voice... they'll be
   walking in here any
   minute now.
    (beat)
   Any minute.
    (beat)
   With a big cup of hot
   coffee. Or a bowl of
   corn chowder This...
   stuff in the survival kit
   is barely edible. Who
   approves the recipes for
   these things, anyway?
   Someone who never had to
   eat them, that's for sure.
    (beat, sighs)
   Repeat: this is a general
   distress call. I am a
   citizen of the United
   Federation of Planets and
   a Starfleet officer. If
   you can hear me, please
   respond. My government
   will reward you for any
   assistance you can offer.
    (beat)
   I am marooned on a Class-
   L planet and I have
   extremely limited
   supplies -- oh, NO!
